David Dunlap is a one-man art movement out of Iowa City, practicing what is now known as “social practice” way before anyone coined the term. We’ve long admired his work invoking the visionary and spiritual power of social justice leaders. History tends to sanitize these iconic figures, and David’s work brings back some of their raw power. We at OLB are very honored to be receiving one of his painted MLK suit coats. It will be on extended loan. We asked David if we can use the suit out on the streets. “You sure can!” he messaged. He then sent us an installation shot of a similar suit in a museum. “At rest,” he said, “these suits are also at work!” This statement connects so well to the text painted on the coat: “Dreaming, He Is At Work…” We’ll be thinking about that at the celebration of MLK’s life today.
